In societies where more and more people develop mental illnesses due to old age, the question of how to deal with psychic illnesses or dementia of various sorts is increasingly becoming a pressing challenge for biomedical ethics and for diverse social institutions (as families, hospitals, or social security systems). This alone would be sufficient to explain why we need a philosophy of psychiatry in which we can explore and discuss the numerous ethical problems arising in this area
